Permanent Resident (PR) of Canada refers to a person who has set foot on Canadian soil and who has been granted permanent resident status in Canada. Permanent residents are not citizens of Canada, but citizens or citizens of another country.

A foreign national must first be a Canadian PR before becoming a Canadian citizen. In general, no one can be a direct Canadian citizen. Canada issues PR cards to individuals with PR status. In a sense, the PR card is the Canadian version of the American Green Card. The PR card has a fixed term which has to be renewed before it expires. That is, it is not a permanent document.

If you are able to achieve PR status in Canada, you will enjoy the following benefits: All social benefits, including healthcare coverage, as Canadian citizens; The opportunity to live, work, or study in any province or region of Canada; The benefits of protection under Canadian law, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms; The right to apply for Canadian citizenship after a certain period of residence as a PR.

On the other hand, the things that a Canadian permanent resident or PR cannot do are: vote in the Canadian election, or be a candidate in the election; Candidates for some government jobs where high-level security clearance is required. In addition, a PR may receive a privilege upon re-entry into Canada to travel or work outside of Canada, however, the Government of Canada is not obligated to allow him or her to enter Canada.

If there is a suspicion of a criminal history, Canadian security or any other serious reason, the immigration officer may block a PR's entry into Canada if necessary; A PR cannot re-enter Canada even with an expired PR card.

Following the adoption of PR status in Canada, certain rules have to be followed to maintain it. For example, a PR person has to live in Canada for at least two years, usually every five years. There are, of course, some exceptions. For example, a PR is considered to have lived in Canada as long as he or she spends time outside of Canada with his or her Canadian citizen husband, wife, common-law partner, father or mother. In addition, if a PR is engaged outside of Canada in a Canadian business, he or she is considered to have lived in Canada at that time. Another issue is that PR status can be threatened if the rules set by the Canadian government are not properly followed, however, PR status is not automatically revoked.

As I said before, Canadian PRs own foreign passports, not Canadians. To get a Canadian passport, you must first be a Canadian citizen. After residing in Canada for a specified period as a PR, a PR can apply to become a Canadian citizen, subject to certain conditions.

If the application for citizenship is approved, a certificate of Canadian citizenship is issued through an oath of allegiance to Canada. A Canadian passport holder can travel to almost every country in the world without a visa, which a Canadian PR cannot.

It is to be noted that many people in Bangladesh say that those who go to Canada and become citizens are second class citizens of that country or second class citizens. In fact, there is no such thing as a second-class citizen in Canada; It's just propaganda. The reality is that as a Canadian citizen you can directly criticize anyone, including the Prime Minister of Canada, or draw a distorted picture of someone if you want to.
